RTE TV are offering 60 second ad breaks to help advertisers avoid clutter (12/02/2010)
With RTÉ Television having less commercial minutage than competitive commercial channels, clutter is kept to a minimum in advertisement breaks. RTÉ Television are introducing 'stand-out breaks', a series of 60 second ad breaks running for 8 weeks, Wednesday evenings at 20.59 on RTÉ One. Typically RTÉ One attracts an audience of 600,000 Adults at this time on Wednesdays.
The first 'stand-out break' will feature in Not Enough Hours, which returns to RTÉ One on Wednesday 4th March for a second series following a very successful first run in 2008. A Millward Brown online survey conducted recently determined that short ad breaks generate even more cut-through with audiences.

Latest JNLR release covering the period from July 08 to June 09 (21/08/2009)
Noteworthy changes in comparing reports - Apr 2008 to Mar 2009 versus July 2008 to June 2009:
National stations performances were as follows, Radio 1 increased its audience reach by 21,000 to 899,000. The majority of this increase was in the 45+ age group. Today FM and 2FM declined audiences by 11,000 and 9,000 respectively. The majority of the lost listeners can be attributed broadly to the 15 - 24 year old age group. Newstalk grew its audience by 10,000 to 257,000 and the growth was largely in the 20 - 44 age group which grew by 8,000. it should be noted that 2FM programmers have made a conscious decision to move away from a target of 15 - 34s to a slightly older as yet undefined market (likely to be 20 - 44 or 25 - 45). This programming change and its effect on listenership will take a couple of years to be fully realised. This change is likely to be contested by the independent radio sector, namely Today FM. The independent radio sector stations must consult with the BCI, Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, before making any such targeting changes, yet RTE, so far, has been able to do so at will. The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show retained the no.1 breakfast show in Ireland, with 226,000 listeners, 53,000 more than 2FM's Colm and Jim Jim. See the top 20 programmes on the attached document. Newstalk and TodayFM continue to be dominated by male listeners with 70% and 60% males respectively.
In Dublin, FM104, despite a slight decline retains the number 1 spot with 194,000 listeners. 131,000 of which are 15-34. Spin 1038 also saw a slight decline with a listened yesterday figure of 138,000 (down 8,000). But Spin 1038 still retains the no.1 station spot for 15-24s in Dublin reaching 83,000 compared to FM104s 53,000. Dublin's 98 grew its audience to 151,000. Spin 1038 has a 57% female listenership compared to Phantom FM's 63% male. Phantom FM now reaches 30,000 adults.
In Cork, RedFM retains the no.1 spot for reaching 15-24s (51% listened yesterday). Cork's 96FM holds the no.1 position in reaching 20-44s (44% LY).Inreaching adults Cork's combined 96/C103 reaches 49% where as Radio 1 reaches 25%, Today FM 18% and 2FM 10%. RedFM is largely ignored by the over 45's with 92% of its audience under 45.
Among the Regional stations, i102-104 continues it's upward trend from 74,000 to 93,000 listened yesterday. 52% of whom are in the 15-24 age group. The success of regional youth stations are a large reason for 2FMs shift into an older market. Multi city station, 4FM, and regional station covering the Nth & Nth West, i105-107 will not have figures available until Feb 2010.
Two Interim Reports accompanied the main report - 4FM is now reaching 95,000 adults per week after 16 weeks on air. According to the launch brochure the station had a target of 100,000 per week in year one. So, the station is on track. i105-107 also had an interim report produced. It now reaches 16,000 or 6% weekly of the 15-34s in its franchise area. Both these stations will not have a full report listing until Feb 2010.
In the local radio station markets (16 stations), Highland Radio and Limerick Live 95FM continue to perform at the top with a listened yesterday figure of 65% and 52% in their respective franchise areas. KFM in Kildare continues to struggle with a 25% listened yesterday figure. This may be put down to the fact that the area it is in means that there are a lot more stations with 'spillover' listenership (from Dublin and the surrounding counties), giving the population of Kildare a very large choice of radio stations.
Regarding the top ten programmes in Ireland there was little change to be seen. The majority of programmes grew audiences moderately with Morning Ireland retaining the no.1 spot with 461,000 listened yesterday. Gerry Ryan's show lost 4,000 listeners and is now in eighth place in the top ten. A full listing and updates for each station will be on site here in the coming days.
